Tablet for someone with arthritic hands?

I want to get my mum a tablet as a present.

She's pretty competent on PC stuff but suffers from arthritis and would not be able to do touch screen stuff, swiping with finger etc.

So, she needs to have keyboard functionality too. Are there any tablets which can have keyboards plugged in?

Any other hints?

Many thanks
Maureen

I would have though a tablet would be easier. You dont have to use a finger to swipe any part of the hand or body will swipe.

Various apps for larger onscreen keyboards etc.

Possibly the biggest screen you can afford?

  • I would imagine many tablets out there can work with a bluetooth keyboard, but as for how well they work I have no experience. I am sure others must have experience, but a netbook would possibly be an answer. It may help others if you say what your budget is

I too am baffled at the concept of someone who can (apparently) use a PC keyboard and mouse/pointing device being unable to swipe a tablet screen with a finger......

If you suffer from arthritis holding a tablet is not necessarily very easy with one hand whilst you swipe with the other , nor is holding a cup of coffee/tea think about it.

Who said anything about holding the tablet? We're talking about operating it.

My OH places the iPad flat on the dining table, 99 times out of 100, and operates with both hands.

I think you need to define what your mum will be able to do regarding finger gestures, as this can be a lot of how they're used. But looking on ipad stuff, they have accessibility options that can be used, which do include things like single finger gestures.

I don't know if this is the case on android tablets however, could someone else confirm?

Have you looked at some of the Surface tablets from Microsoft, Windows 8, almopst a mix between a laptop/tablet, with detachable keyboards etc. Try looking at a Surface Pro 2 which claims to be A laptop in the body of a tablet. It is also frankly shocking price wise :D So also look at a surface tablet as well.

... and there's umpteen cases on the market that are designed to hold the pad at an angle when it's placed on a tabletop or desk.
  • I too have arthritic hands and use my ipad a lot. As mentioned you can buy wallets that hold your tablet so hands free!

Also most come with a tool I call a dabber. Don't know the tech term for this. But if your mum can grip a pen then she can use the dabber to type, swipe, tap etc, so you don't need straight fingers as it does it for you. Hope this helps
