100% agree. My 530D with run flats has coped great with all snow conditions over the last 5 years. Hopefully it will be the same this year as I've just replaced the full set again with the same Dunlop runflats.

The only time I've been stuck is in queues of traffic behind people who can't drive. Also strange is that people would rather sit in their cars moaning about being stuck than get out and give a hand by pushing\digging out those that are stuck.

I've also got a pair of snow socks which have sat in the boot for 4 years sealed and unused - just in case!

This year, the wife will be driving the BMW, so it might be a different story

Why should we push/dig them out. If we can drive on racing slicks in 2 feet of snow, they can as well, and if they can't, we can drive round them. And we don't need to carry shovels, do we?

It's called helping people and it's what makes society tick ;). I even carry a shovel on my defender in the snow, but I've never had to use it for myself.

In off-road situations, I've benefited from people winching me out of 2ft of mud before though and been grateful for the assistance.

It's not always possible to drive around people when the roads become gridlocked. A couple of years ago, I was about 15 cars back from a junction where everybody was stuck behind a transit van at the crest of a hill. Me and one other guy were the only people who helped and got the guy going again. Everyone else preferred to sit in their cars and moan about it.

This is probably the main reason the 530D copes with the snow with run flat tyres on, if you drive the defender instead. ;)

You'll get people saying "20 years ago we didn't need winter tyres", which is partly true.
Due to fuel economy targets, etc, the tyres cars modern cars are fitted with are summer ones designed to be very efficient on warm, dry roads.

20 years ago we didnt "need" airbags or ABS brakes either, but now that the technology is there, its clearly of benefit to use it.

I have to agree. I managed to get around without winter tyres for over 30 years. However, it's a damn sight easier to stay mobile and pointing the right direction with winter tyres fitted.

Yep. I used to drive an old rwd, on crossplys, over some of the worse roads in England. I never got stuck either. I wouldn't go back to it from a fwd on winter radials.

No, I've only had that a year. Before the BMW, I had an Impreza Wagon WRX. I was never concerned about getting stuck in the snow in that. On the downside, I spent an awful lot of time filling it up in garage forecourts. Every 4-5 days. It was a great car but I would hate to be paying for the petrol for it now at today's prices.

But was it the defender you where using in the snow then as well? Having that as the other car puts a different light on it somehow.
