Non-traditional wedding dresses

Is anyone else going for a non-traditional dress?
I really didn't want a white gown, and even if I did I think I'd look a bit daft in one. I'm fairly alternative in my dress sense, but it seems all that's on offer are gothic or medieval style dresses and I'm not into those kind of styles. I do like 50s style dresses but one of my friends is getting married the year before me in the exact same brand I had my eye on, so that's put me off a bit!
We're also having a very informal wedding so I was determined to get a dress that reflected that. This is the dress I have bought:

I'm going to wear it with some quirky shoes, statement costume jewellery and a fur shrug which are all things I would normally wear and will keep me feeling more like 'me'. I also have a small birdcage veil which might make me look a bit more bridal!
My mum's of the opinion I'm settling and need to find 'the one', but I just don't get it. I'd rather spend more money on the wedding rings as that's what I will hopefully be wearing forever.
Anyone else feel this way and want to share their non-traditional dresses with the board?

I love that dress! I think you should feel comfortable with your choice, not just go for the conventional if that is not you.
When I got married 35! years ago I didn't want a traditional white dress either and at the time Laura Ashley dresses were very popular but I couldn't afford one of them, and I would have had to travel 100 miles to look at one. So I decided to go to a local dressmaker, she agreed to make me one from a Style paper pattern. I bought the material, a pale yellow background with floral design, she made the dress and it was beautiful and suited me and everyone said how lovely it was and of course it was unique.
I still have it but sadly can't get into it now but would never part with it.
Go with what YOU want, and have a wonderful day!0 -
Fuzzy_duck - that dress is beautiful! I may have to steal it....
I love this one atm. http://www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-Soft-Bandeau-Skater-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=3069824&cid=13930&Rf-200=20&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=36&sort=-1&clr=Ivory
we're getting married abroad, so want something light.0 -
Thanks ladies- it's nice to hear I'm not the only one that wanted something a bit different! Those are lovely dresses
I especially liked the sound of yours thriftytwosome as I'm a frequent wearer of patterned dresses and love picking out pretty fabrics! I seriously considered doing the same but H2B is insistent on matching his suit to my dress, so that might have been a bit difficult for him :rotfl:

You have to wear what you feel right in. I tried on a few more traditional dresses even though I didn't think that is what i wanted, figured I should try them on to make sure. I felt like I was looking at someone else in the mirror (not in a good way!) and wanted to feel more like me.
I love 50s style and that is what I went for in the end.
I would say you wan to look and feel special (particularly if you have friends/family that will make the effort and dress up lots as you don't want to feel outdressed at your own wedding!) but you do need to feel like you - I would never have felt right in a long white strapless dress so went for a short 50s stress with straps and colour! Felt brilliant on the day and everyone said it was very me!0 -
My daughter went for an alternative prom dress the shape was a fifties prom in black with flocked material ....skulls not very weddingy. It was called lavintage. Have you looked at any hellbunny dresses they are quite fun.

Funnily enough Maysie I had considered the exact same dress your daughter wore! It's absolutely stunning- I was just a bit put off by the colour. I really fancied a steampunk style dress like that but most of them are in black
I am a bit concerned about being outdressed sarah69696pink! I'm going to stress on the invites that's it's an informal do and they should wear what they will comfortable in, but I'm sure a lot of people will think, "But it's a wedding- I have to dress up!"
I'm considering buying this choker and matching earrings to make myself look a bit more special though:

Not sure whether it'll be too much with a plain-ish dress though!0 -
I LOVE your choice of dress and the tartan one is absolutely stunning! Recently a friend of a friend got married in a slinky green floor length dress with a thick metal waist belt... she looked absolutely awesome, really stunning.0

That sounds lovely! I had considered a green dress as well as it's my favourite colour, but the dress I liked was also floor length and I had to accept I look better in shorter dressesI think that's the annoying thing about dress shopping- you see something you like, but you have to think about whether it will actually look good on you as well!

Go for something made for you in a patterned fabric that you love - and when H2B says "waistcoat?!", hand him the leftover fabric.
(*Then* reveal the one made by your dressmaker for him.)
If he looks uncomfortable in a fetching floral waistcoat, he can always ask for a cravat, or cummerbund, or fez...0
