Gardening books

I;m looking for a good book for a friend for Christmas. I want something that will advise you about when to plant and what to plant. My friend loves gardening but don't have a lot of luck with her plant's.

I like the RHS books, although I don't have this one:

My favourite book on the subject is the Readers Digest "The Gardening Year" by Roy Hay. It's been out of print for a while, but you can pick it up on Amazon/Ebay.
I got my copy (the 1970 edition) at a village fete for 50p. I would have paid £10 or more for it!
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I agree with Wallbash the Dr D. G. Hessayon books are excellent especially as you seem to be buying for someone fairly new to gardening.

The two I would start with are the Tree & Shrub Expert and the Flower Expert.

I'll have a look along my bookcase later...from memory Monty Dons' "Complete Gardener" isn't bad, esp. if you have a desire to reduce synthetic chemicals on food crops.

Must if be a book? "The Geoff Hamilton BBC Collection" on DVD is something of a classic, but you have his book "Ornamental Kitchen Garden" too.
My friend loves gardening but don't have a lot of luck with her plant's

It's for enthusiasts rather then beginners, but the RHS "Plant Propagation" has everything about growing from seeds and cuttings.
  • Past christmas but for future reference the expert books are great. Got most of them.

On the vegetable side I would recommend the two books written by welsh allotment gardener Terry Walton who appears on radio 2.
