Make an anonymous phone call to the police and tell them 'you' have been bragging about making home made bombs / other illegal stuff. They'll have everything recovered in no time.0

If it's an external drive, then it's essentially a hard drive within a USB enclosure. So the first step should be to remove it from the enclosure, and connect it directly within a desktop PC as a secondary drive. If the enclosure is the faulty part, then it will work within the PC and allow copy/paste of the files.

Which would you prefer?
Take a good shot at getting your own data back, and void the warranty, or
Keep the warranty and take a gamble that the dweeb at PCW will care at all about your data
