Greater London hotel/transport

Am planning on visiting London and need accommodation for Sat/Sun 30Nov/1 Dec.

Will be travelling by car and need to pick a relative up in Farnham on the Monday, so need to be fairly close to there.
Don't want to take the car into London so need a hotel near a station/tube ie walking distance or a station with car parking.

Don't need a fancy hotel, a lodge type is fine.

Would also like some info as to what type of travel ticket I would need - is a day travelcard the best way.

Sorry for so many questions but am a bit green when it comes to this, have always travelled by train direct to centre of London.

It looks like there is a direct train service from Farnham Surrey to London Waterloo that takes just under an hour and seems to cost £14.90 each way for your dates on Southwesttrains. There is a Travelodge a few minutes walk from Waterloo and one ten minutes walk away at Southwark. You also have a Premier Inn County Hall which is near the train station and a Holiday Inn at Southwark. All pretty good locations with good transport links to all parts of London. Waterloo is by the embankment so you have the London Eye, House of Parliament, Big Ben, Thames Boats all there. it is a reasonable walk from there to Covent Garden. You will proabably won't get a cheap hotel in London for a Saturday night for a stay a few weeks away, but Sundays are often a cheaper night to stay.

A daily Travelcard is probably the easiest as it gives you unlimited travel on tubes and buses and if bought from a train station (which Waterloo is) it will have the British Rail logo on it that you can use for the 2for 1 train offers. The cost for an offpeak Travelcard is £8.80 (weekends are off peak all day). If you are getting the train in from Farnham you can use these for the 2for1 train offers as well.

  • Thanks for response, I was actually looking for a hotel on the outskirts of London and then travel in by train/tube.

Is Farnham in the travelcard zone, maps seem to stop at zone 6 but I realise that they go up to zone 9.

No farnham is outside the London overground travel route.

Sorry I misunderstood and thought that you planned to park the car near Farnham for collecting your relative on Monday and then stay in London as you mention needing to have the car near Farnham?

If I have understood correctly now you seem to be looking for a hotel near a tube/train station on the London Transport route that provides easy access via the M3 to Farnham? You could maybe look at Richmond, Surrey as the district tube line terminates there (zone 4) . If there is no event on at Twickenham for your dates you may get a reasonably priced hotel, but may have to pay for parking.
