I've only used it occasionally and not had a problem. I've avoided brand new sellers and ones with low feedback.
As far as I know Aliexpress hold funds until items are confirmed arrived. A I said though I haven't had a problem so don't know if it's easy to get a refund.

I've used them once or twice - be very picky with your seller, look for one with a long and consistently well rated history. AliExpress supposedly has an escrow function so the seller doesn't get paid until you receive and accept the goods, however I gather some people have had a hard time getting a dud sale refunded, so take it as you will.

Alibaba is the allied company and is widely known as high risk for dodgy suppliers. Long-distance trade is always a risk, especially if you pay upfront with a bank transfer, Western Union, etc. Quality can be low, deliveries absent, companies can vanish overnight. If you're buying in any volume then you need a local trusted agent to do the purchases for you!

its only a few low value odds n ends really
• I use AliExpress and DHGate quite regularly. You should check both if you haven't already.

AliExpress works on an Escrow system, so the seller only gets the money once the item is delivered, so yes, it does have buyer protection.

whats the payment methods?
• I use Aliexpress fairly frequently and have never had a problem. I've always paid by credit card (they don't accept Paypal, and I don't fancy any of the other options).

However, do take into account that if the seller uses China or Hong Kong post then goods can take a while to arrive; and if they use a courier like DHL it will arrive far quicker but you may have to pay import duty or VAT (plus a handling fee) before they will deliver your goods.

I have used them quite a bit but last year I had terrible problems when 2 of my items failed to arrive.

The sellers ignored me and I opened cases in the equivalent of their resolution centre and was told it would be resolved in 48 hours. I was told that a few times over the course of a month and had to threaten them with a credit card chargeback in the end . I finally got refunds, after kicking up a fuss on Facebook, but it took around 4 months.

They closed down their Facebook page after that as the complaints about the dispute system failing to work numbered dozens every day.

The only real issue is shipping time, if you are going to order get your skates on so as to miss the xmas rush.

Alibaba is now bigger than Amazon and Ebay combined, payments are via escrow, and sellers seem very afraid of bad feedback, so will usually make things better.

• I am a saler on aliexpress for more than 2 years.
aliexpress is competitor to ebay, so paypal do not want to support him, you cannot use paypal on it, credit card are accepted.

The main shipping methods in China are those: FedEx, DHL, China Post, Hong Kong Post, Singapore Post, Swiss Post and other shipping way.

FedEx and DHL is very fast, DHL > FedEx
Other shipping way takes long time, from 10-60 day, the main time is about 15-30 day. only Russian and nearby country take the longest time.

If you want fast shipping, please select DHL, to save money and have time to wait, select others, China Post is the cheapest, but now it not accept the product that with battery. Hong Kong Post also do not accept battery.

All package with tracking number, you could track the package on website, and know where it arrived.

When you received the product and complet the order, the saler receive money from aliexpress.

So there is some problem for big saler, that limited their development, i know many salers do not only sale product on aliexpress, they built their own online shop, brand website to sale, i and all my friends start to do so.

i live in shenzhen, there is a largest Electronic products market - huaqiangbei, there are hundreds of thousands of factories and manufacturers, most products on aliexpress, you could find there.

I sale dash camera, action camera, GPS, security products, i do not know what product you need, may be i could help you.

If you have any questions, just ask me, post reply or PM me.

AFAIK Aliexpress refuse to use Paypal rather than the other way round. Can't say I blame them. That said it does seem to leave off a level of protection.
Obviously it depends what you're buying but I have bought from some sellers with low feedback. As the descriptions are translated, often quite badly, some buyers expect different items and leave low feedback, despite the seller doing their best. Often the lower rated sellers will have a better deal, so just check feedback.
I'd suggest a small purchase to check out a seller and/or the system.
