02895 numbers

I have noticed that some companies and individuals have started using 02895 phone numbers and according to a site I looked up they are used in order to us to believe that they are in NI when they can be anywhere in the UK. Has anyone else come across this? And does it cost more to call these numbers?

My niece has a 02895 house number - definitely a normal charge number.

    Think they are in NI?
    (028) 95 is a local NI number. No reason a national company shouldn't use it if they want to. Charges from any (028) number to it will be local...

It's been the case for a long time that companies can take local numbers to make them appear that they're local to you, when they can be based anywhere in the UK and abroad, the joys of modern telephone networks I'm afraid.

  • My landline is 02895, was set up last May.
  • Definately a Belfast local number - 028 95 was introduced do to demand on 028 90 numbers.
At the time 028 90 was introduced it was felt adequate to give 91-94 to other locations eg. Bangor, Ards, Antrim.
So 028 95 had to be used for Belfast numbers.

Yes, individuals. A podiatrist in Belfast gave an 02895 number on his website. There was a delay when I dialled the number, as if it was being transferred to a mobile or something. I smell a rat!

How do you know this? I can't find it written anywhere. Would it not have been in the papers or on the news?
