Hi there,

First time buyers our house is pretty much built and should be completed on 25th November. We will be moving in within a fortnight hopefully of that.

Looking at G+E though, and water obvs, but for G+E all the sites we look at ask for our current usage?

It is a 2 bed semi, new build, just the 2 of us living there.

What have others here done as FTBs when getting their utilities sorted?

Up to now have you been living in a yurt? If not you must at least have a foggy idea.

I think you could estimate around £80 - £100 per month for gas and electricity combined averaged over the year. As you are moving in in winter i would guess it's a lot higher. i.e. our gas usage goes from £12 in the summer months to over £200 in the very coldest winter months. Excluding standing charge.

If you are a heavy electricity user i would up that another 20-30 quid.

From those numbers it will estimate what tariffs suit you best for your location. You really aren't going to know what your consumption is until you start using it.

Assuming a new house, modern boiler etc those numbers above are about where you will be, perhaps on the cautious side. It really varies from house to house, install and usage habits.

Use the UK averages of 16,500kWh of gas and 3,300kWh of electricity.
You will be in a deemed contract with the existing suppliers initially.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
