E-On Pre Pay Gas. Query

Hi guys,

Got a question.

Me and my partner are with e-on for our gas and electricity.

Im currently on hold to talk to e-on and thought id ask here to see if i can get some answers.

But basicaly we do no understand how when we top up each time, money gets deducted for "debt".

How can we be in debt for something we pay for in advance?
When you go to the menu on the meter, the debt tab says £0.00 however when we top up £2 is deducted.

Very annoying as last night the gas ran out so we went to put on the EmCr but was told there was none avaiable, we dont know why this wasnt available, we top up roughly £25 a fortnight, so no reason why the emercency credit would be used, and this morning when i topped up 25, from 0 we only have 22.46 credit, this isnt the first time this has happened but time i let it go as it was only a few pounds but now a few months later it keeps happening its probably nicked about £20 in total. I asked the E-on guy who came round and he said theres no debt on the acount and showed me where it would tell me if there was.

There will be a daily standing charge for the gas. If, over the summer, you have not been topping up regularly then arrears of standing charges will have been built up. Or, if no build up, just this week or last week's standing charge (it is often taken off on the same day each week rather than every day).
  • we top up regularly, only gone to 0 once.

I edited in in a cross post about the once-a-week payment bit.

That may or may not be the problem. To clarify things for yourself on a prepayment meter it is often very useful to use the meter readings to keep track of things. That is, just as with a standard meter, each week or each month on the same day take the meter reading. You can use meter readings to determine how much you have used and how much it has/should have cost. This is more helpful than trying to parse what happens every top up.

    Hi Williamf1989,

I'm sorry about the hold times.

Nada666 is correct in that we do charge a daily standing charge.

Whenever credit is put into the meter, whether there is a debt set to collect or not, the meter will always split this credit into 70% and 30%.

30% automatically is put on the meter for gas and the 70% is split as follows:

To pay back any weekly debt owed to the meter, any Emergency credit that is owed and if the daily standing charge is not paid for that week, it will be added to the following week’s charges.

If you haven't used the emergency and all of the standing charge is completely paid, all the top up will go towards gas.

If you pop on the website, there is a lot of info on how this all works.

    Hope this helps.
