    The easiest parental controls I have found is through Opendns. It is very easy to set up filters for different ratings of online material and the service covers up to 3 devices on your home wireless network for free. Anything above that number comes under their premium service. Having used Opendns for a few years now there has been no problems with it.

    Have you tried having an open conversation with your child about it?

    Surely educating him on what is/isn't acceptable and why is better than completely blocking him from doing it or spying on him.

    @sillygoose - K9 does the same thing, but it's free. (Or was last time I needed to use it anyway). You can't get any more MSE than Free. ;)

    All well and good providing the child doesn't Google for how to Bypass K9 Security
    Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
    Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
    Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
    Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

    Since I was educated long before t'internet were thought of, I have to ask -

    If the homework routinely requires internet surfing, and this is why you need the laptop, then shouldn't you either;

    - Persuade the school to give out homework that doesn't require 'research' on the internet, or

    - Help your child with the homework, so that you're doing the surfing, not him?

    That's not really an option - using the internet is a fundamental part of education nowadays (to the extent that if you ask my kids' secondary school why they don't give textbooks any more, they will tell you that they expect them to be using other sources of information, not just one textbook). So they need to be learning the skills of researching topics on the internet, rather than parents doing it for them.
