Stiff collie

Hi all,
Billy is 10yr old border collie always in excellent health
Over the last few months he's started to be a bit stiff on getting up
He's not lame and it virtually immediately wears off
Still having same walks etc
He wears a bioflow collar and is on senior do food
Do I go to vet or do I start giving him oil, devils claw, cortaflex or something similar? All of whiCh I've used on previous oldies before resorting to rimidil

I would recommend a vet trip. There are so many conditions that can cause stiffness of the joints, I would want to know what I was dealing with and the right way to treat it.
For example, my 7 year old Rottie cross developed intermittent stiffness. Vet didn't think it was the nasty bone cancer her breed can be prone to, but possibly arthritis given her age. I wanted to play on the safe side though so had x-rays done, it turned out to be tendonitis in the shoulder/bicep. Unlike arthritis, it is treatable, and requires rehabilitation exercises after a period of rest and anti-inflammatories. So giving supplements and carrying on as normal/reducing exercise as I may have done for an arthritic dog, wouldn't really have been the best route.
I would get a diagnosis and decide where to go from there.0 -
Yes your right I will take him this week he gets so stressed though and poos all over the floor I always try to avoid lol
He's well insured so no worries there0 -
definitely a trip to the vet.
It might also be worth thinking about what he is getting up from- I have recently bought a thick memory foam bed for my dog, and it's made such a difference to how stiff (or not) he is on rising!0 -
Billy is a right pain ,there is beds all over the house
But he lays on the floor
I even took my laminate up and put carpet
Down for him lol0
