Laptop keeps shutting down due to low battery -even though plugged into the mains!!

The laptop: Acer aspire 1670
The battery: BATELW80l8H
I cant understand why it seems to use and rely upon the battery even when plugged into the mains. There doesnt appear to be anything wrong with power supply - green LED on its transformer is on, and the laptop recognises when connected by lighting up its own LED.
Any ideas guys?

What happens if you remove the battery and run the laptop solely on mains?0

When the battery is removed, it wont start up at all (despite being plugged into the mains).
