Trying to claim ppi but....

I have got in touch with my bank about getting some information on a company i was paying ppi too that I believe was missold to me way back when I was 18 and bought a Gameboy Advance on credit from Dixons.

I knew I stopped paying it in 2007 as cancelled the direct debit with the company then. However as I've decided to look into trying to claim some of this money back it appears that the company no longer exists. So my question is what is my next course of action?

The company details that Natwest provided me about the direct debit are that the company was called Assurance General Assurance Ltd, based at 117 - 119 Whitby Road, Slough. They also gave me a number which i dont have to hand but a quick google search on these turned up absolutely nothing except that the address is up for let.

Cant say i'm entirely surprised mind given that its 6 years ago that I cancelled the direct debit and the current financial situation of the country.

So any advice on what to do next or is it time to call it over to the professionals

    Two questions:

why do you believe it was missold?

if the company no longer exists who do you think will pay you?

Did you buy it pre or post regulation (14th Jan 2005)?

People working in call centres in Swansea after 10 minutes training are not professionals. You need a reason for complaint and you need a company to send it to. It also needs to be after regulation of insurance in a case like this.

You seem very confused as to what it is Claim Management Companies actually do. CMCs can only act on information and evidence you provide to them. If you have no evidence or (as in this case) the company you want to complain to no longer exists, then there is nothing a CMC can do that you cannot do alone and for free.

As Dunston says, they are hardly "professionals".

If it was sold before Janaury 2005, as said above, your complaint is over. If it was sold after, you go to the FSCS.

You are also not 'claiming the money back', you are complaining there was a problem with the sale.

  • Thanks for the replies. As you can tell I haven't really got a clue about this stuff. To answer a couple of the questions;

The reason I believe it was missold was because I remember vaguely just being told to sign stuff infront of me to get the credit for the purchase but dont really remember stuff being explained to me about ppi or even agreeing to it for that matter. As a naive 18 year old who wasn't interested in such things it may be the case that I simply glossed over it but wanted to check with the company to see if I signed anything about it.

Also another thing is that the premiums were charged well after the credit was paid off and would probably have continued if I hadn't cancelled as it showed on my statement as "bankers insurance". but surely the point of ppi is to protect the payments of the credit if you lose your job and can no longer pay.

I used the term professionals loosely as I get they arent really "professionals" but probably have more of a clue than me at this point.

Also I'm pretty sure I took out the credit in around 2002/3 maybe. It was a long time a go now and dont really remember the exact details of the start and finish and online bank statements only go back so far.

As for the company I dont know whether they've closed down or rebranded or what. But dont know whether any of that information would be accessible to the public domain or not.

If you continued to pay the insurance after you paid for the item, then you weren't paying PPI, you were paying general insurance on the item itself and you were repsonsible for cancelling the insurance.

If you find out who you were actually paying, you can ask them nicely for the premiums back, they don't have to do this, but if you word the letter with a reference to the length of time a console like that could be expected to last and ask for the premiums back formt he time when it went kaput to the time you cancelled the premiums, they may....chances are though, that they won't, so be prepared either way.

  • I am prepared to not get money back. However the reason I dont think this was general insurance on the item is that when I cancelled it I have memory of the woman on the phone trying to convince me to keep paying the premiums "incase I lost my job" or words to that effect. Which stands out to me that if I kept paying and lost my job I could claim additional income from the insurance company to keep the same income. I only remember snippets of the conversation but it came across as sounding like ppi but not against any credit which is confusing nonetheless.

    Thanks for your help regardless.

    This is pre-regulation (January 2005)

It matters little now, since your complaint would be about a sale which took place prior to regulation and the company doesn't exist anymore.

Even calling in the "professionals" won't change the fact that any complaint you make will fail even before it is considered.
