Indicators working erratically

My indicators have started playing up, only working occasionally. When they don't work, I press down or up on the stalk but there is no noise or light on the dashboard. Does this probably mean it is a fault with the indicator stalk rather than corrision somewhere on the wiring? It is an old Peugeot 205 which do have…

I am not using the car at the moment but last time I checked they worked and now I just tried again they were working, I will check the hazards next time I find they are not working.

Funny they are working while it is parked, last few time I drove it they rarely worked, I resorted to arm signals out of the window!

Sounds like I need to check the contacts then?
