Hudl app updates

I've recently bought a Hudl, which is on Android 4.2.2. Despite changing the setting for Play Store to "Do not auto-update apps" it is still downloading updates without asking.
My Nexus 4 (now Android 4.3) has the same setting and has never had any problem telling me updates are available but not downloading unless I agree to it.
Has anyone else come across this, either on the Hudl or on another device, and if so have you worked out how to prevent it?

Are you sure it's not just the notification you're still getting - '3 App Updates available'? If that's the message you get, they haven't been downloaded yet. I don't think you can stop that check but it'll use very little data if that's your aim.0

I have set my Hudl to not auto update, and so far it's doing as it's told!0

No, that what I'm aiming for, which is what happens on my Nexus 4. It was definitely downloading, I had to force cancel a couple of the larger ones (it's not a data volume issue as such, more that I have a broadband fault at the moment that BT seem unable/unwilling to resolve so my speed is very low, around 200 kbps, so a big download clogs the pipe up for ages).
It hasn't either notified or downloaded since yesterday so next time there's an app update available I'll see which it does.0 -
It now appears to be working as expected, I was notified of update availability today and manually downloaded the ones I wanted. I suspect that the ones that started to download automatically after I'd changed the setting may already have been registered for download either on the tablet or on the Play Store, and once those were disposed of it's doing what it should do.0
