laptop fault after less than 4 months

I bought a laptop from currys/pc world on 19/07/13. So less than 4 months ago. I paid for the laptop on my credit card and paid the balance off in full. The store I bought it from is not my local store, the laptop I wanted was not in stock locally so I was sent to a store 40 miles away who did have one.

The laptop has developed a fault and switches itself off without warning, sometimes within seconds of being turned on so it's not an over heating problem.

Given the age of it can I ask for a replacement laptop rather than a repair? I really don't want to be without my laptop while it's being fixed and risking they don't fix it properly and the fault returns.

Do I have to take back to the store I bought it from our will my local store do?

I would appreciate any advice.

You can ask but you cannot insist. They can replace, refund or repair, which ever is cheapest or easiest for them usually.

You can ask for compensation for being without a laptop but again it is unlikely as a laptop won't be classed as something necessary to live with.
  • Have you restored the laptop back to the factory settings?

It could be a software problem that is causing the shutdown, and if this is the case then it's very unlikely to be covered either by the warranty or by your legal rights.
If possible, you should backup any info that you have on the computer as this will be erased if you reset it, and it will probably also be deleted if Currys have a go at repairing it.

If you can't start the laptop at all, you may be able to remove the HDD and get someone to copy the stored data for you, but make sure that this won't invalidate your warranty first.
  • If I can get it working long enough I will try a factory reset. The only programs on there other than what was pre installed is office which I bought at the same time as the laptop. And my antivirus.

Everything is backed up regularly so it's no hardship if the drive gets wiped
