Moving Gas/Electric Meters

Hi,

My meters are located under the stairs and the gas meter is virtually impossible to read without crawling or getting a small kid to read for you as it is right at the bottom of the stairs.

Electric is also quite unconfortable to read.

Anyone know the process for having these moved to the outside of the property (same wall just on the outside) and any costs (if any) and how long does it take to have the work done?

Thanks in advance, Ash

I think you pay a builder to knock the holes in the wall and fit the boxes, then pay a sparky to run the cabling out to the box. A gas engineer to run the pipework.

You then get the leccy board to fit a new meter and connect up the tails the sparky left there.

The gas supplier fits new meter and connects to pipework.

You pay for all processes, the amount depends on your contractors rates and your gas/leccy suppliers.

There isn't much room where i can house these without getting in the way - i suppose they can go on the outside wall and maybe a metre or two forward.

i'm just concerned its going to cost me when the stupid company put them in such awkward places!!! (btw, i've just bought the house).

mchu6am4 dont you get the utilities guy around to read your meters, if so let them worry about it. I think I have only ever used telephone once when the guy came around when I was on holiday.

To get them moved is quite expensive I think
  • Hi,

We asked about having our electric meter moved to the other side of the wall [from inside to outside], the thickness of the wall.

The 'lectric people quoted us £850.00 !!!!!!

Needless to say, it is still where it was

    Hi there,

I looked into this too a while back. As others have said it is very expensive, prohibitively so for me. The electric was around what people have said and the gas was even more and that was to move both to the other side of an internal wall - no distance at all!

I think if you're moving the meters outside it can be even more costly as they also have to build special housings to put them in.

From memory I think it was Transco who deal with the gas side of things and I believe it's illegal for anyone else but them to do the work. They send you out a pack and it has all the prices and calculations there for you to work out what the overall cost will be or alternatively to draw a plan and complete their questionnaire, pay a deposit and they'll come out and give you an estimate and I think the fee deposit is refundable if you then decide not to proceed.

    Good luck!

    Regards,

To have your gas meter moved your first point of contact is your gas supplier. They will then forward your request to the Gas Transporter for your area. Transco no longer exisits. In the area where Transco operated,it is now National Grid Gas. There are different Gas Transportation Cos for different areas.Check your bill. It will say on there. The GT will send you a survey pack on which you draw some diagrams etc. Return it,they then quote you. If you accept the quote, then there is a set time span by which they have to complete the job.

The major cost for Gas is that they often have to excavate in the highway and renew the existing service in plastic. Digging in the highway is expensive as the ground needs to be made good to the high spec required by the local authority.
