Have a look at this guide to diamonds:

I personally wouldn't buy earrings as a special present as they can be prone to getting lost... maybe a pendant?:hello:0 -

I'd say unless you have a hefty budget, colour/cut/clarity of diamonds probably won't play a big part in your choice.
For example, H Samuel are offering 9ct White Gold Illusion 1/10 Carat Diamond Earrings. 1/10 of a carat is 10 points which is pretty small. And they are £185 (was £249).
I'd make sure that your Mum would really appreciate diamond earrings.
I always wear earrings too - often 2 different pairs in a day - but I wouldn't appreciate a pair of diamond earrings - that's just my opinion though.
Hope you manage to sort something out that she'll love and treasure.

I'm sure it's well meant but by the age of 60 most people have all the 'stuff' they want and are often thinking of decluttering/downsizing.
If it was me I'd prefer a nice day out or weekend away or theatre trip with a meal: an experience rather than stuff.0 -
To be honest, when I was 60 a year or two back, the last thing I would have wanted were earrings, diamond or not, from somebody else......
What I really did appreciate, were gifts that had a bit of thought in them. Tickets to shows that I wanted to see and experiences that I'd spoken of in the past, but never got round to doing. A hand knitted item especially for me in a colour a friend knew I liked, that sort of thing.......My 60th was lovely and I shall always remember the things I got - and who gave them!0 -
I have to agree with posts 4 and 5.
Hit the 60 mark a few years ago and my family bought me a diamond pendant, and although it is lovely and even more so because they all contributed to it, I only wear it on special occasions.
What I appreciated more was the lovely day they took me out for a lovely meal and then the theatre and flowers and chocolates. Memories are more precious than 'things'
At my age I don't actually need anything let alone want anything, other than my family round me.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks everyone, will look in booking tickets for a show or maybe an experience day.Crazy cat lady0

I agree with the others - I will be sixty next year and tbh while diamonds are nice - I would love to go on a day out with family, or have tickets to a concert. it isn't 'stuff' I want now - its happy memories!
if it helps - when my aunt was 80 I was the only one who didn't buy her a present - she got a card and it was an invitation to day out of her choice - we suggested 'Theatre Trip', a day at a famous museum, a trip to the coast with lunch at a well known restaurant.
She chose the museum (I thought she would) and my OH and I took her, the three of us had a fabulous day out and we bought her a small souvenir from the gift shop.
when she died a couple of years ago we were clearing out her home and we found all her 80th birthday presents, still in their wrappings in the spare room. her little souvenir and the card were on her bedside table. It made me cry.0 -
I have diamond earrings which I don't wear in case I lose them ! I wear more modern silver jewellery , some set with amethyst or other stones , now , instead of gold . I was 60 last year and yes , I've got lots of jewellery , but I really appreciate the silver I've received for presents and wear it every day , well , not all at once , of course ! I think it depends on what the individual likes .0

I don't mean that I wouldn't appreciate gifts of Gold, Silver, or even Frankinsense and Myrrh! its just that its easy to get a gift - but what really matter is putting thought and time in the giving and execution of the gift!
Aunt absolutely loved every moment of her day - to being picked up and the drive down to museum, to being fussed over and looked after like royalty. mum said aunt bored her silly for years after - always talking about it.0 -
Yes, meritaten , I agree that it's lovely to do something special to remember . That's sad about finding all the 80th birthday gifts not used . My mil is 87 now and I saw in her bedroom an unwrapped bottle of Chanel, which she likes , that she got for her 80th . We didn't buy it but what a waste . I wonder why people don't use and enjoy gifts they receive . I don't save anything for best as I reckon this is as good as it gets !0
