Nikon Coolpix S3500

I am about to buy one of these, but being completely non-techie would really appreciate some advice about a suitable memory card to buy, or indeed if I need to buy one at all.

I currently have a very old digital camera with a 128mb SD card, whereas now they all seem to be in GB's.

My queries are:

Do I need to actually buy a separate card or does the camera itself have any storage capacity?

Would my old 128mb SD card work in it?

Roughly how many photos does the smallest GB card hold? I don't take very many at all.

I have read the product description through but can't see any mention of the above.

No internal memory so you would need to fit an SD card.

Would my old 128mb SD card work in it?

Yes probably approx 20 jpg images.

Roughly how many photos does the smallest GB card hold? I don't take very many at all.

Approx 150 on a 1GB card.

I have read the product description through but can't see any mention of the above.

Before I buy anything I tend to download the user manual available here.

I don't understand why my present SD card would only be good for 20 pictures, I can currently get over 100 on it. Is a jpeg image different?

It's likely your old camera uses jpeg as well but the imaging sensor will be a much lower resolution (I would guess at around 1 or 2MP compared to 20MP on the one you're looking at) and therefore the images will take up less space.

SD cards are cheap, I would recommend getting a new one as your older memory card may not be quick enough to handle the data transfer rate the new camera will require and you can get a 16GB card for under ten pounds (8GB cards are generally only a few pounds cheaper).

Thank you for the advice.

Is there much difference between SD and SDHC? I just don't want to buy the wrong thing:o I see that SanDisk are on their list of recommended cards, which is what I bought years ago.

SDHC (HC stands for High Capacity) replaces SD so any card over 2GB will be an SDHC card up to 32GB then beyond that it switches again to SDXC. So any standard card you're looking at around 8 or 16GB will be SDHC which will work fine with the camera you've mentioned above.

Sandisk are a safe bet but just make sure you buy from a proper retailer, there's masses of fakes out there which you want to avoid.

It does have a small amount of internal memory too. From the product details.
"Still images and movies can be stored in the camera’s internal memory (approx 25MB) or on a memory card (not included). SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards are all compatible[2], and cards up to 128GB are supported."
