eBay bid removed, 'entered wrong amount'

I'm selling a few things on ebay just now and during the week I had someone bid on an item. Pleased that it was going to sell, I logged in this morning and the item has gone back to zero bids.

I didn't have an eBay message about it so looked in my email and there's notification that the bid has been retracted.

So I went to my listing and it says the buyer removed it because they had 'entered the wrong amount'. Took them about four days to realise!

So I had a check through the eBay help pages and it states that only in certain circumstances can a buyer retract a bid, and if it's due to entering the wrong amount eg. £50.00 instead of £5.00, they should then enter the amended amount. It allows me to report someone who is abusing the bid retraction option.

It seems obvious to me that the person has placed a bid, either changed their mind or bought one elsewhere. So I sent them a message saying that I saw they have retracted their bid but haven't yet entered the new amount and a reminder that the auction ends tomorrow.

Obviously, everyone knows that you can't make someone pay but what happens if I report the person? Do eBay re-instate the bid and I end up with a non-paying bidder or does their bid remain retracted?

Having another issue with someone who won an item a week ago and not yet paid (new buyer, zero feedback.... sigh)

Normally don't have any problems, guess it must be my turn for the idiots this week lol

    It remains retracted permanently.

It is in place to assist when bidders make genuine bidding increment mistakes, but abusing it is known on ebay as an invalid bid retraction, its only in place if someone mis-types FOR EXAMPLE....£99.00 instead of 99p then realise they come back to the page and change it, that is a valid "entered wrong amount" or if you were changing the listing after someone had bid on size 5 shoes say for example and you edit the listing saying "sorry just realised they are actually a size 6", bidder can retract citing "seller changed listing" and if someone bid then emailed you to ask for more detail etc and you didnt respond they can retract it and cite "could not contact seller". Any other reason is not allowed and ebay will monitor people who repetitively bid then retract their offers.

Just block the person, as they may jump in at last min and place a bid, and cause you a headache....just ignore them, and report them to ebay on this link

NB...People online who are here asking advice for "my friend" they really mean "myself"
  • I don't think that eBay will take any notice whatsoever. I recently posted this link which shows a bidder who has retracted 1,343 of his/her bids in the last 6 months and is still active on eBay:

Wow that's interesting, I thought you were only allowed one or two retractions, like NPB strikes. I have my fair share of retractions and it's a mighty pain in the bum

Thanks for reporting to us the bidder “ebay member” who retracted their bid for the alternative (item ***********). I know how this matter upsets you so I assure you that I will look into this as we don’t allow this kind of behaviour.
As a result of my thorough investigation with this matter, I’ve confirmed that your bidder has breached our Invalid Bid Retraction for not placing a new bid when they’ve retracted the original bid.
By this, I’m happy to bring you the good news that I’ve taken the appropriate action towards “ebay member” with this breach.
I can guarantee you that this action have negative effect on their account and at the same time, will be recorded towards them that may lead to issuing the member an informational alert, a temporary suspension, an indefinite suspension or terminating the member's account.

You can also check how often a member has retracted a bid in the past 12 months in their Feedback Profile. You'll find it on the "Feedback as a buyer" tab. If you are concerned about a bidder with a high number of recent bid retractions, I suggest you send them an email to ask them about it.
What you can do is to add this buyer to your Blocked Buyer List so that they can no longer place nay bid on your future listings. You may do so. You can block up to 5,000 bidders from bidding on your listings by following the directions on this page:
    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/services/buyandsell/biddermanagement.html
You can also set other bidder eligibility criteria for you to avoid this kind of incident in the future. You can do this by following the steps below:
    1. Go to My eBay > My Account > Site preferences.
    2. Under Seller Preferences, click 'Show' next to 'Buyer requirements'.
    3. Click 'Edit' and enter your preferences.
Please accept our gratitude for taking your precious time for reporting this member. We take action on reports of members who break our rules very seriously. Such reports are very vital for us to ensure that the community will experience a wonderful trading on eBay. Once again, let me reassure you that I've already taken the appropriate action towards the member you reported.
I trust I’ve eased your concern with the action I’ve taken to the bidder you reported.

Person has 12 retractions in last 12 months. The item ends in a few hours now so I've blocked them in advance. Hopefully someone watching will chip in before the end.

Now to deal with the NPB from last weeks auction...
