FTB Utilities Etc...

Hi, I realise that there is a utilities forum, but my question is about utilities in general and that forum seemed to be "over categorised" in that I had to choose Electrickery/Phone/Whatever.
I am a FTB and (so far) all the moneysaving advice, comparison sites etc have been related to people switching etc. Is there a site/thread I should be looking at regarding one's first house and expected/typical useages?
Even better, is there a supplier anyone would recommend based on things like the following: No fixed term contract (i.e. can change providers within a couple of months, once montly usage has been determined), good introductory offers, general all-rounders, good customer service.
Thanks to all in advance, and keep up the good work! :money:

Valued Opinions: £2 (not that impressed by them)
RPoints/Quidco: Not much, waiting for a couple to appear on the radar.
Financial Achievements 2008: 1) £46 Agent Provocateur for just £22.43, new and legal!
2) Had HSBC waive £100 of fees

You have to keep the previous owners gas and elec suppliers for the first month so best thing with these is when you find out who they are put them into one of those price comparisons such as uswich to see if you can save money by switching.0
