Honest opinions please

I am considering this laptop for my daughter. She uses her laptop for watching films, Facebook, Internet etc. also supposed to be doing uni work on it...
Honest opinions welcome

When you say she uses it for watching films do you mean streaming or DVDs? If it's the latter then it's no use as it doesn't have an optical drive. But if she doesn't need that then it'll do what she wants as long as her uni work is writing essays rather than running a CAD program. Whether it's the best option I can't say as I'm not up to date on current laptops - but I'm writing this on a nearly 4 year old HP laptop on which I did all my Masters work and it's been fine for me.
  • Would really welcome more opinions on this laptop please...........

HP no thanks them and Packard Bell are in my view unreliable .
  • Bought a very similar one at the end of last year (same line but different processor) and returned it. Spec-wise it was nice but build quality was poor (it creaked when opening, typing was loud and clacky and the keyboard creaked in places.

I ended up ordering a Dell for slightly less money and it feels much better put together (still plastic but feels a lot more solid). Also looked at Samsungs and they had a good feel.

For a bit of internet access, online video, word processing, email then frankly anything you can buy now is capable. From thereon in you pay more for build quality, more power, more frills.
  • I'd rather go for this configuration:

i3 processor and 6GB and only £20 in it (after cash back).
  • Although more expensive, fenlander's recommendation is sound.

The original PCWorld laptop will do the job, but I would question reliability - I work on more HP/Compaq machines than any other. Also you should take into consideration that a copy of Microsoft Office will probably be required as well. You could of course get a free alternative (such as openoffice), but to keep things simple I would suggest getting the paid for version.

Everyone's Laptop manufacturer preference are different, based on experience of failure/success. I've seen HP's last for many years, while others fail within 13 months (conveniently after the warranty). Like any mass manufactured product, it's a risk. I would hope your daughter used a form of online backup such as dropbox. This means that should the laptop fail, her files will be secure and accessible from any other machine.

I hope that's useful and I didn't womble on too much!
