I think its time

For dear old rosie to go to sleep.
she was treated for an abcess on her paw a few weeks ago and the whole experience of going to the vets was completely traumatising for her and us.
she developed diarrhoea about a week and half ago and on her last visit to the vets for her paw she gave some prescription food and a pro biotic paste for it but said to go back if no better.
well it's no better and I simply will not put her through going back to the vets and a barrage of tests.
the diarrohea is bad she cannot hold it and is doing it all over the house.
I want to gets the vet over next week.
dh is resistant, he is saying we should give her another week but I do not want to let her suffer, I don't want the kids seeing her get weaker and I don't want her to be found one morning possibly by the kids.
I know its my decision and in my heart I know it's right but what if dh is right and giving her another week might mean shes ok.
help please.
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

Is she still eating and drinking as she would normally? If so, then I'd be inclined to give her the extra week, tbh. I'd also second the boiled chicken and rice diet, you could also put the poaching water down to tempt her to drink.

I am sorry - but I disagree and think pukkamum is right. poor rosie! it must be awful for her if she has previously been a 'clean' dog. She is suffering and pukkamum is right to want to stop this. if you gave her another week and she got worse - how would you feel then?

I understand how your oh feels - but tell him, I still feel guilt over delaying too long with my last cat and dog and giving them 'just one more week' .........................it was cruel of me, not kind.

I would actually do the rice suggestion pukkamum - just to give poor rosie some relief if at all possible.

I did say 'if', and it's a big 'if'. If Rosie isn't eating and drinking as normal, then my advice would be different, but pukkamum hasn't said.

I'm a firm believer in "better a week too early than a day too late". I've done the "day to late" and swore "never again".

It's such a horrible situation to be in, and A situation I was going through 6 months ago. My 18 year old suddenly had a downturn, from a very active, agile cat who no-one, not even the vets could believe was 18 became very unwell. My cat who previously had been 4.5 kg lost a lot of weight rapidly and went down to 2.8kg? His bloods were all over the place, low HB, high CRP (indicating infection) and his thyroid function was high (previously moderately controlled). My vet couldn't really understand what was happening, warned it could be cancer ( he'd had an op twice when he was 12 for cancer) or could be his thyroid meds. We stopped the thyroid meds and focused on getting his HB up whilst covering him with antibiotics in case of infection. He rallied a little and we glimpsed our old boy again, but it was a gruelling few weeks emotionally. At the end of the 3rd week it dawned on me that he wasn't going to get better, I had a horrible week of anxiety, even having to take a couple of days off work sick (am never off sick). I discussed it with my hubby and vet, my hubby's take was 'he's still eating and going to the toilet' the vet respected my decision but asked me o consider, his HB was improving and his CRP. As lowering. I agreed and spent 3 days nursing him round the clock, feeding him small morsels of freshly cooked meat into him and syringing high calorie supplements into him. By the beginning of the following week it was obvious how much he had deteriorated, he was so agitated with his thyroid not being controlled, he don't keep his head out of the water bowel nod everything he ate he vomited back. By this stage, hubby and vet both agreed it was time to let him go. It still wasn't easy, and I don't regret those last few days trying o help him but it just reinforced in my head that when I knew, I knew. I still miss him every day and dread having to face similar with his 18 1/2 year old brother, but at least blow most of our memories are apply ones rather than the sadness of his last few weeks. Big hugs, at such a hard time.

Me too. This happened to me years ago but I still feel guilt and regret for needlessly prolonging her suffering.

It's so hard though. It's a rotten decision to have to make, pukkamum. :(

Best wishes to you and Rosie x

When did the vet tell you to go back if the poo problem didn't resolve?

You should talk to the vet if you and your husband disagree about her treatment or whether she should be pts. Preferably both of you should talk to the vet. Then after that you should sit and talk with each other.

You cannot just make the decision and push it through on this one and if you do so you may find that your husband secretly holds it against you.

I think you and OH really need to be on the same page.
