Damage from debris in road

I reckon if you can't see a brick sized object at 25 metres then you are highly likely to run over it when you do get close enough to see it.
OP wanted facts not opinions remember, so:

Was going to read the entire thread but it seems a bit messy.
None of us was there so we don't know exsctly what happened.
I hit some debris on the M25 a couple of weeks ago.
Bit of square shaped metal fell off the side of a polish lorry in the lane ahead of me and bounced down the road.
Couldn't swerve much as traffic all around and the wife was following behind.
Managed to lose some speed and hit it when it was as low to the ground as possible then went over it with both o/s wheels so it didn't bounce up and hit the wifes windscreen. But i still nicked the front bumper low down.
Now will somebody say i could have avoided it completely?
Well yes i could but caused a probable fatal rtc in doing so.
It is possible the OP was distraced by the workmen and large vehicle parked on the side and their attention was partially diverted.
I don't think the OP will get any financial recompence but i wish them luck.
And looking on the bright side they weren't injured physically.
Really? That's a bit dramatic.0 -

About 15 minutes later the engine starting making a rattling sound and the oil warning light came on. She pulled over and called her breakdown company. Whilst stopped a significant amount of oil pooled up under the car. It was towed to a garage where the initial assessment was the oil tank was damaged with possible engine damage.

Engine damage should be minimum if any at all as your mum did the right thing in pulling over and not driving any distance.
As for a claim you're mum will have to prove the rock came off the truck, but I would still try.0 -

You said you was going to come back and let us know the outcome, I assume your mother did not get the outcome that you wanted and she had to claim on her own insurance, a fault claim and loose her NCD.0 -
Ah I was pleased to see this thread back but unsurprisingly the OP has disappeared. Perhaps his house was bulldozed to make way for a new hyperspace bypass.0

In my opinion, unless it was a motorway, the driver should have stopped. If there were vehicles parked I'm going to take a pop and say it was a 30 or 40 stretch. She could have stopped and driven over slowly, or gone round.0

Just my 2 cents worth I had a very similar accident last year . Although I was on an s bend and I tried to avoid rock but oncoming traffic prevented this. Tried to stop but went over a rock doing about 20miles a hour .stop immediately but didn't turn car off
due to dangerous bend I had to move the car about 200 yards . I knew I had done damage to sump pump but after pump was fixed when garage started car the engine blew. Insurance company answer even tho It was a road near a quarry the rock could not speak and accept responsibility. Had to claim off my own policy very frustrating. For your mum but as someone has already said at least nobody hurt.0
