Smart Meters - what are the criteria for installation?

Greetings
I registered an interest with BG to have 'Smart' [sic] meters fitted but all I got back was a curt e-mail saying "they had done some checks and unfortunately can't upgrade at the moment".
Does anyone know what checks they carry out and what the criteria are please?

Their website says you may not be able to have a smart meter if the mobile signal is weak in your area - they use it to send the data back. You also can't have one if you are on a pre-pay meter. Is there anything you can tell us about your home that may explain it?

It's hoped measures will give early adopters of smart meters greater confidence in the technology.

It seems that the Big 6 need to get round the table again with the MPs and agree a standard for smart meters!

As for the house it is a bog-standard detached on a relatively new estate, so we do have electricity available here in N Wales and have done for a while now
As for wanting a SM I thought why not make use of the new technology and stop BG over-estimating my bills and gathering quite a little credit on my behalf.
The point about a mobile signal may be relevant. We do have quite a good mobile signal on all major networks but if they use the G signal - well that is quite a different - we currently have 0G.
Another possibility is they use Broadband as the transmission method and that is s**t despite what the WAG says!

The gas man came and read my meter this morning so i don't need a smart meter this time.

The decision to not install your smart meter was probably based on the age of your current meters. More importantly, the age of your electric meter.

You'll need a signal at the point where the meters will be fitted, not just in the area. Since mine are in a cellar-no signal. And accordingly, no smart meters.
I can hardly be alone in facing that issue.

I was told I can't have one yet (by EON), because they haven't any gas meters and can't install the electricity one alone.

* Lack of concern of G4S mining you usage data
* Not bothered by EMR
* Not bothered that hackers / supplier could potentially cut you off remotely
* Like of having meters changed regularly, as they are installing them before even agreeing the specs so most meters that have been installed are too dumb to pass EU rules

Just go online and give them regular meter readings. I do my Npower almost weekly, never have an estimated bill.
