As above I am returning my 3 weeks old iPad 4.
I am 72 and have arthritis and have found it far too heavy to use.
How do I completely clear it of everything including my bank details etc., without losing the apps I have purchased.
Appreciate any help.

Did you set up iCloud? If so, you should use it to back up all your programs, apps, etc. By doing this your data is stored on an Apple server and later can be restored to another Apple device.
Once done you can do a factory reset and revert the ipad back to the state it was in when you bought it. This will have the effect of deleting all your personal information from the ipad.
You must remember though that your stored iCloud information can only be recovered by using another Apple device, whether that be an ipad, iphone or laptop.
If the ipad isn't suitable what will you use instead?
Another thought is take it as is into your local Apple store and explain to them that you want a refund but you haven't saved any of your personal data, purchased apps etc. As a pensioner I'd like to think that they would go that extra mile in assisting you achieve what you need. If they don't then I hope they should feel ashamed of themselves as their public portrayal of being a company that cares about its customers is obviously a sham.0
