tom tom

Does anyone have the same problem with their tomtom map cutting out when in very built up areas, town centres, etc. The voice continues but the map freezes. Not sure if I need a new tomtom or if it is a signal issue.

  • I've had a few Tomtoms. they only seem to last a couple of years before going wrong, ( with the kind of symptoms you describe). I'm not going to buy one again. I bought a Garmin a couple of years ago and although perhaps not as intuitive as a tomtom , its lasted well and is accurate and reliable enough for me. I used it in portugal a couple of weeks ago and it was great.

Have you updated the TomTom recently via a PC and the TomTom Home software? They quite often release updates for the units.

I've had mine for about seven years now and it's still working, fine. Never had an issue with it freezing in built-up areas or anything like that.

My Tom Tom is fine everywhere except for London where it spazes out regularly.

Yeah i have a problem with mine too - it's a tomtom lol and that says enough!

I was in london last year and mine kept doing crazy things. Add to that I had the company one too which also did crazy things, both were trying to take me in totally different directions and both kept loosing the signal, freezing, getting lost, recalculating etc.

Mega PITA. Snag is mine was gven to me as a gift so I have to be a bit careful.. gift horse in the mouth and all that.

I have TomTom Start 125 EU - bought it about a year ago as I, then, felt my iPhone screen with TomTom app was too small, and not really good on longer trips. Big mistake.

TomTom software on iPhone (this was iPhone 4) simply outperforms the Start. Sometimes it takes 20 minutes of charging before you can switch the TomTom on, loses signal constantly, tells me I'm driving 200 yards to the left of the motorway, and even takes 5 minutes to locate any satellites. Absolute waste of time. Not to mention some really weird routes and country lanes it suggests.

The problem with TomToms is that, although their software is very intuitive and the graphics look great, they use seriously outdated and bottom of the range satellite chips and processors.

This is my last TomTom ever, will only use my iPhone in the future. iPhone with the TomTom app is fantastic (apparently Navigon is also good), quite often they sell them at half price.

  • I've had a Tom Tom for years but haven't used it for ages due to its unreliability. More too often than not I would lose signal or was unable to find one... Then the next day it would be fine. Also after a while it would need to be permanently plugged in for it to work for a decent amount of time.

Ditched it for the Waze app on my iPad which is far more reliable.
An opinion is just that..... An opinion

I've had a Tom Tom Start (not sure the exact model) for about three and a half years and have never had any problems with it at all.

Surely the problem in areas with lots of tall buildings is simply that the satnav can't 'see' the satelite as the buildings are in the way?
