Does the letter from Westcott contain an account number? and does this tally with Dad's account number?
Dad should start by sending westcott the prove it letter - Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letter

and wait to see what they respond with.

Did he think he closed the account down when the final amount was paid off? or was it just left with a nil balance but still open?
The statements will all have gone to the main account holder - does he not still have them showing a zero balance?
Has he never received any statements/letters from the card company since 2008 and now?

hi, the letter has a reference on that looks like a credit card number but we have no paperwork to compare this too.

I paid the card off and just assumed i suppose it would be closed when not used, how can they get a balance of over a thousand pounds on something that was cleared.

we have had no statements or anything from them until this letter yesterday.

would you stll send that "prove it" letter?
    thanks

There's a reasonable chance you didn't clear the full balance (or you did, but there was residual interest that came through on the subsequent statement) and the £1,000 now showing is made up of interest and multiple £12 missed / late payment charges.

Did you make the final payment via a cheque or online banking? There could be a trail that confirms the payment.
  • I dont have a mint card yet i get an email every single day from MINT saying there is a problem with my account and an attached ZIP file - what is this all about?

if i remember rightly it was over counter at bank, and i just paid what was asking for to clear it.
i suppose that could be right that it is just charges..... and interest.

I would expect that's spam with spyware attached, probably to fool you into thinking it's a genuine login page so you enter your details and they then proceed to clear out your account.

I used to regularly get them from "Lloyds TSB", having never had an account with LTSB of any kind!

Yes, he isn't aware of any debt, they are saying there is one. They must prove it to him.

It definitely will be. No-one should *EVER* open a .zip attachment in an email, unless they are expecting it and are exactly what it is.

It's very easy to hide an executable file in or as a ZIP, and once run there's no limit to what it can potentially do to your PC.
