    Assume E=2, T must be 9

    L must be 0 as H+H+F cannot carry 3

    If 2+2+U=2, then U=7 or 8

    If U=7 2+2+R carries 1, but R cannot be 6,7,8, or 9 so U cannot be 7

    So U=8

    H and F must be 6 and 7 which leaves 1,3,4,5
    R cannot be 3,4,5 so R=1 and N=5 which leaves 3,4 for O,V

But 1+1+O+1 carried=V. This is impossible so E cannot be 2.

This is supposed to be for eleven/twelve year olds?

I'm wondering if the school is trying to find out if it's the kids or the parents actually doing the homework.

Thanks. That takes the problem forward usefully.

It is effectively what is required for Mr Toad to say that E is not 2. I am quite prepared to accept that E is not 2. But not off the back of Mr Toad's argument which actually shows that it is either 1 or 2
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
  • This sounds like something out of Higher/A level maths. Not my strong point and don't understand any of it lol.

    Thank you.

You've written it down much more clearly than I did and taken it right to the point where the E=2 hypothesis falls over, something I did but in my head then had trouble explaining.

This is why I'm not a teacher, I can do but not teach, that and the fact that the private sector pays better :D

    How about this one.

Replace all the * with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 to make the following true. You must use all the numbers and use each only once.

    **
    x *

    Housework? :A

Oh yes, never had to do it, I have a Doris that does who comes to muck me out once a week. Actually she's been looking after me longer than my mother did. Left home to go to Uni at 18 but Doris has been mucking me out for nearly 30 years. :o
