New gas connection to existing main?

I'm hoping someone may be able to tell me if I'm imagining things.

A long time ago I read that if a property is not connected to mains gas, but there has been a gas main in the street for over a certain amount of years, gas can be connected to the property free of charge.

I've searched, but with the forums being the size they are, it's a needle in a haystack. The original post recounted how some gas company employees were unaware of this but the writer eventually got his free connection.

I would be very grateful if anyone can advise me - even if it's a myth! Can you tell I'm keen to save over £600?

Thanks lemontart - this does seem to be the case. We've been making enquiries and finding the same thing. Just living in hope that there may be exceptions or discounts when the rest of the road has had gas for at least 20 years and the main runs about a metre from our gate!

By way of a P.S. - thanks for the links. Having a look through I found that Northern Gas do vouchers in some circumstances to reduce the cost of gas connection to domestic premises.

    Going to do some sums...

NGN wont do anything for free, let alone what they are supposed todo.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
