How do I get HMRC to listen or act???

Due to the mess my tax credits claim got into last year I have been on manual payments for CTC since December 2006.

I received a letter from HMRC at the end of May to stating that I was going to continue on manual payments and indicating the amounts & payment dates. I realised immediatley that they were planning on overpaying me by over £100 per week!! I called them immediatley and advised them, they took note of my estimated earnings for this year and said it would be adjusted.

The next week I received a giro for 6 weeks money & it included an amount of over £600 that I wasn't entitiled too. Again I called them, I was advised that the person who had taken my call the week earlier had not recorded my details correctly. They took my new details again and I was advised that a supervisor would call me to confirm that things had been updated.

Again about 10 days later I received a letter to say that they were stopping my payments and I was now not entitled to anything for the whole year. I called them again and again I was told that a supervisor would look into it & call me back.

I have received no phone calls from them. I know this for certain as I gave them my mobile telephone number and I have had no 'unexplainable' calls.

On Saturday I received another giro again it was for the overinflated amount. So I have now been overpaid by over £1000 this year already!! I'm going to call them yet again tonight but I'm getting very concerned about this and am hoping that somebody can advise me of any action I can take to get it resolved as the calls I've made so far don't appear to have got me anywhere.

Also I was advised that I would go onto automatic payments as of April, can anybody advise why this hasn't hapended and if there is anything I can do to get that sorted.

Sorry for all the waffling but this is really getting beyond a joke!!

Oh wow.. what a nightmare. I can understand your frustration. Have you tried getting an MP involved? It's quite simple to do - you just email the MP for your local constituent and they will maybe get more answers than you.

    Don't spend those giro's :D
  • Hi,

My advice is not to spend the giros (or the surplus anyway), but stick it in a high interest saving account. (still got time to open the Tesco one & recieve the clubcard points if you have £1000 in by the end of the month).

Unfortunatly HMRC are really slow at acting on mistakes, but rest assured they will want the money back (usually at the most inconvinent time).

So solution is keep taking the extra money, put it in a the savings account (thus = profit) & when they ask for it back, it is there plus interest which is yours.

    Happy days.

Send them a letter stating that you have received your payments, but that you are concerned that you may have been paid an incorrect amount and would like them to confirm that you are entitled to the payments. State that you will allow them 4 weeks to look into the matter, after which, if they have not responded to the contrary, you will assume that you are fully entitled to the payments you have been sent, as you are unable to work out for your self if they are or are not correct, but that you do need your payments to make ends meet.

keep a copy and sent it recorded.

gie it 4 weeks, spend the money, if they change their minds after that, tell them you'll see them in court! :D

and you'll sue them for mis-administration of public funds, cassing unneccessary stress etc etc....
