They really are unreal!
I rang into the office mid September to advise them the car had failed MOT and that I would not be able to test it and have it back on the road until mid October. I explained that I would then probably just wait until 1 Nov to tax it rather than pay for all of October when I am not using the car.
Anyway the lady on the phone was quite grumpy and unhelpful but she did take my details and advised me that it was now declared as SORN and all I needed to do was ring up at the end of October / start of November and tax as normal. At which stage she explained that would take off the SORN notification at time of taxing.
When I rang in today to tax the vehicle they had no note of this conversation taking place. They had however got notifications of the other 3 cars which were declared SORN at exctly the same time by the same lady in the same phonecall!
Moral of the story is I have to pay tax from the 1st October as the tax ran out at the end of September and backdate it or else pay from 1st November but have a fine for the month of October!
rant over

Bad luck -Did you take her name and time of your call?0
-
No didnt get her name, it is something I do all the time and never had any real problem before
. I was able to provide the date of the call though. Even the girl I had spoken to today was surprised as the other cars were noted down but just one was not. She said what they do is write it on a small piece of paper and pass it on to the relevant department and its obviously got lost somewhere.
I presumed when they took the details over the phone they entered it on a computer there and then but apparently not, the girl said that is not how it worked.
I know its only a month but still don't like giving them more money for nothing!0 -
Don't complain she might go sick with stress??

They should have the member of staff's details if they have 3 other cars details, just put a freedom of info in, then complain in writing. You'll be grand, and I'd say get the month and no fine, but act quickly.0 -

So the plan was to have the car on the road in mid-October and not tax it until the 1st of November. If this was confessed in the phone call it was a rather brave thing to say to a government official.0 -
Them's the rules - no gaps allowed. Your car is either taxed, SORNed or illegal. No such thing as 'leave it a month'.0

If it was SORNED until the 1st November 2013 as you propose - then you may run into trouble when driving it on the road mid October when taking it to be re-tested if you were stopped by police. Sounds like a no win situation.
In general the price of Road Tax is ridiculous - my car is only £20 per year (happy days) yet my husbands is £280 per year0 -

It's not a "Road Tax" any more, it's another "Green Tax". It's based on engine Emissions and nothing to do with Vehicle size/weight/amount of time it's on the road so technically not a "Road Tax". I'm in exactly the same predicament as you..0 -

You can drive it on the road to and from a pre booked MOT appointment as long as its insured.
You wont really run into trouble with the police either if you get stopped as its not a road traffic offence anymore, its a licensing one. They might report you to the DVLA but as I said above, its not an offence if you are driving only to/from the MOT centre.0
