Help with laptop spec

My daughter is hoping for a laptop for Christmas. It will be used for homework, teenager social media etc and also video editing - she is a budding film director and would want to be able to use editing software and suchlike.
She's not interested in gaming, so no need for that.
A netbook looks nice and portable but I wonder if a full sized laptop would be better.
Would anyone mind giving me some pointers of the kinds of spec we would need to be looking for? Also, it seems that lots of laptops/ultrabooks come without an optical drive but you can buy external drives - is that a viable alternative?

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

A laptop with internal drive may prove better, any processor will work, but an I5 or I3 would encode video reasonably fast, lots of other threads on the same subject in the run up to Christmas.!!
