Sash window insulation
Mildlycurious
Hi all, I have 2 rickety sash windows in my bedroom and need some cheap ideas for insulating them. Shall I just buy some of that cling film stuff that you stick on? The windows are single pane and move sideways! Also, the putty is starting to come off. Thanks for your help.

I seen on you tube homemade secondary glazing with perspect and magnet strip sor looks quite good“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

I wouldn't bother with the plastic film type stuff on leaky sash windows. I tried it once. The plastic rustles like a crisp packet in the slightest breeze. Once the wind gets up, the force of the wind is enough to rip it away from the sticky tape they supply, so it no longer keeps the draughts out.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Really heavy curtains. Or pretty ones lined with blanket.
The sash window is a lovely thing but not the most draught proof.
Replace the putty as soon as you can - take advice on the right stuff - (bathtub mastic is Wrong!)0 -
that clingform is carp.
You can go for secondary glazing using magnetic strips or screws. Depending on the window size you will be looking between £60 and £200 per window.
If you want to stop the draughts then I use newspaper to plug then first. This also stops the panes moving, then use draught strips. You can get about 30 linear metres for £10 off ebay. Heavy/thermal curtains are pretty good too in combo with the aforementioned.
You need to remember that most heat will be lost via external walls and ceilings so there is only so much you can do."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0
