P45 from jobcenter

Hi,
I was wondering… I was on jobseekers allowance the whole summer, I got a job end of september… but I never received a P45 from the job centre. I remember some years ago when I was unemployed I got a P45 from them but this time nothing…unless they don’t send it anymore or maybe is not necessary?

Of course its necessary. Why did you not ask the JCP?We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I've always had a P45 from the jobcentre posted to my house. I can't really remember how long it's taken in the past but it was at least a few weeks.Sealed Pot Challenge #239

You definitely need a P45, if anything it shows a new employer what you've been doing, as well for taxation purposes when you are in employment. You should have filled out a P46 when starting a new job if the P45 is not yet available and then post over your P45 immediately.Ask the JobCentre for your P45, you'll struggle a lot without it.0

The P46 or Starter Checklist form, as it now Is, will advise the tax office where you are now and they will send tax code with previous pay and tax details to your new employer. If you can get a P45 then it may well speed things up a bit but if you cannot your tax should be sorted eventually. Are you on the emergency tax code (944L applied week1 or month1 ) at the moment?0

On my new job I’m on 944L tax code… how can it be emergency code if it is the same one I had at my previous job?
I guess I’ll have to contact the tax office to send me a P45 then..
I can’t remember filling out a P46 at my new job either but I will ask0 -

The emergency tax code is the tax code that everyone starts off with. If you have nothing to adjust this code eg benefits from the employer or tax owed from past years then your tax code will be the same as the emergency tax code. In your case the difference will be in the way it is applied, your old 944L was probably applied on a cumulative basis while the emergency tax code will be applied on a week1/month1 basis.
Contacting the tax office can do no harm might speed up the issue of the cumulative code to your new employer.
Any form that you filled in may not have been marked P46 or indeed it may be that someone just asked you the questions that were needed for the online return. All they needed to know was that you had worked elsewhere and that this was your only job now.0
