Hi,
I got a desmond (2:2) at uni a few years ago and am currently applying for a new position.
Would putting '2nd class' as a degree classification mislead on my CV or should I just put 2:2? Obviously if asked I would tell them the correct degree!

Just riffling through t'interweb:
"David Hipkin, head of recruitment and resourcing at Reed Business Information, warns, 'With most employers experiencing massive volumes of applicants right now, giving them the excuse to dismiss your application because of avoidable errors is not going to help you secure an interview.'"
Me, I'd put my 2:2 in anyway, even if I was 90% sure it would make the whole c.v. go into the bin, because getting slung out at interview would hurt a load more than geting slung out at weeding.
I think you may have to pick which lumps you're ready to take.0 -
I think most people would read second class as 2:2 anyway, as you're more likely to put 2:1 if that's what you got (if that makes any sense at all
)

Got to agree with Tea lover. If I see 'second class degree' on a CV my first thought is that it's a 2.2 because if you'd got a 2.1 you'd have put 2.1.
Put that you got a 2.2 and then concentrate on filling the rest of your CV with the other skills/experience you've got that make you suitable for the job. If you got the 2.2 a few years ago it carries less weight than good work experience as you move on in your career.0 -
Be honest. A Desmond is nothing to be ashamed of (I have one!) and unless you want to brag about a First, can't see that it makes any difference. In any event, there are so many degrees in Underwater Basket Weaving or Mediaeval Golf Course Management around, if you have a "real" subject you are already streets ahead!0

Thanks for your responses. Think I will change it on my CV just on the safe side!0

I've got less than a 3rd (got a pass...) and have never listed the actual grade on my CV. It simply reads BSc Degree Name.
No-one has asked for it over the last 10 years either. If they had, I'd elaborate...0 -
My advice is be honest. Also, a lot of companies now use application forms. NEVER post your CV into them. Make sure you read the person spec and job description and accurately fill out what is needed on both Essential and Desirable for Application form stage0

I would just put 2:2 and the percentage otherwise njust putting second class implies that you got a 2:2 but are ashamed and trying to cover itmup. Good luck with your application x0

I have had my degree (a 2:1) since 1989 and I have never put the classification on my CV. I simply say I have a BA Honours Degree and leave it at that. If they are interested they will ask at interview, but I'm struggling to think of any occasion where I've been grilled over the classification of my degree.Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............0

I've got a Douglas Hurd (3rd). I just put BSc (Hons) on my CV. I've never been asked for the classification, 22 years and counting.0
