The reason i was thinking about a motherboard upgrade was that i i had a sata hard drive and a ide dvd/rw but when the pc started playing up i thought it might be the drive so got a cheap 160gb ide hard drive and backed up the sata then reinstalled Win 7 but my problems still exist.
I am not 100% sure if the sata is ok so i need a motherboard/pc that can take both sata and ide so if sata drive is ok i can put the backup on the sata but if its broke i still have still have the ide hard drive and the dvd/rw.
There are sata/ide convertors but not sure if they are any good.

Out of interest looked at the Passmark performance figures of your AMD 2800 Sempron cpu, it was 375, I use a Intel Celeron G530 whose performance figure is 2191 it is available on Amazon for £42 fit it to an Asus P8H61 motherboard for £38 (Amazon) and you well on the way to a budget computer with good performance - just check the motherboard has the features you need
