I wasn't told about them, it just happened. I told my dad, was in shock for 2 weeks and was off school. It wasn't helped by the fact that I suffer from very bad cramps.0

That sounds like my approach,we have a "selection box" of every possible type of protection and talk about it regularly our latest is guess my time of the month!! Take a look at the Tampon fairy on the Christmas pages..not my kind of thing.Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0

We were well prepared also. And we had a code word so that is she started in a public place or in front of people/family she could tell me without everyone knowing. Plus she carried pads around for a while beforehand, to school etc. Some of her friends who started at school went to her knowing she always had pads with her. And her best mate used her code word with her!£608.98

I thought I was dying when I had my first period. I didn't know anything about periods or stuff.
I made sure my girls knew more than I did as they approached puberty. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I am 62 and would guess that is older than most of you. I am truly shocked that some of your mothers did not prepare you better. My mother was a nurse so maybe that was why she explained everything in good time, but the first time was still a weird experience.
Loving the idea of a tampon and panty pad fight - of course it wouldn't have worked with the no sticky ones with loops that I had to start with.0 -
That's a great way of approaching it. My mum didn't tell me anything and I didn't ask as she was very awkward with such topics. So I actually hid it from her for half a year (I was already 13) because I was embarrassed and she only found out because I went and nicked her pads. I'll have daughter next year and hope I manage to be really open with her and don't repeat my experience. Just find it scary that you have to do it that early nowadays. 9 - gosh. Like the idea of the code word.DEBT 02/25: total £6100 Debt free date 12/250

My dad brought me up from the age of about 7 and goodness he was embarrassing when I started my period. I knew about it, can't remember how, presume school and friends as don't remember 'the talk' with my dad or anyone else! I was in my pj's and shouted down the stairs to dad what I thought had happened and he ran out the front door!
Turns out he went first to my best friends house across the road, then round to another friends house and then another until he found a mum that was in. This mum (who I did know!) came over and helped me out.
Went to the pub with my dad the next day and he announced to the whole bar (all locals) that his little girl had become a woman and there was much cheering and clinking of glasses. Could have died!
He was brilliant though, would always add 'the whatsits' into the shopping basket for me..
Sorry OP, I digress, to sum up my dad didn't have a clue what to do or say to me in the run up. I think what he should have done was asked my best friends mum to talk to me about it all if he really couldn't do it himself!
His actions do make me smile now though, legging it out of the house without a word!
Puds xxReally should be doing some work...0 -
Then we had a huge tampon and panty-pad fight; running around the house armed with five panty-pads each, we had to a stick them on each other. But should we hit the other with a well aimed tampon, we could take off a panty-pad.

Brilliant!
I learned sex education at school, but mum did tell me about periods when I was about 9 or 10. A tampon fight would have been hilarious but I can't quite imagine it..0 -
shouted down the stairs to dad what I thought had happened and he ran out the front door!
I was on the phone to my dad about it (as he was working late - started at 13 so was able to stay home alone) but I imagine thats what he would have done had he been home- he promptly shipped me back to my mums house the next day though!0 -
My mum was really up front with me about the facts of life from about 5.
She had a hysterectomy when I was 7 so I learnt a lot then. She still jokes because at the time I asked if she would miss them lol
When it happened the first time my mum was fantastic and took me shopping and to the pictures as a treat.First Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0
