Debit Card 'phone fraud scam

Vent/warning:

The scenario - the 'phone rings, answer and someone says 'this is DC **** ***** of Paddington Police Station, we believe your card's been cloned for £900'
You reply, 'oh no, what shall I do, shall I ring my family?'
'Oh no, ring 999'
You do, but are suspicious of the 'broken English' used by the person on the other end, and ring off!
You contact your family, who assist you with the bank - relief no missing £900 !!

You - are an elderly lady - how did they get your details i.e. name tel. no. & address???

Comments please

this is an old scam as next then will tell you to hang up and call the number on the back of your card and speak to the banks fraud dept, but they will leave an open line, so you call and think you are speaking to your bank, but you speak to another scammer. they will ask for your pin number and to confirm its correct and that they will arrange a courier to collect all your cards to return them to your bank. they will then tell you to disconnect your phone and then within minutes a person will appear at the door saying they are the courier to collect your cards. but they are the fraudster who within minutes of getting your cards will take that £900+ from your bank account and as your phones disconnected you cant be contacted by your bank about the abnormal transactions.

Does she shred all bills or just bung them in the bin?

Do they actually know anything other than a(ny) phone number? (ie "hello, this is the police, can you confirm your full name, address, card number etc).

The person called, was referred to by her full name, and yes does have a shredder.

The full details have been posted above, but you appear to have skipped over it!

Electoral list, unless you tick the correct box, they sell the short version to whoever wants it. Full name, address and telephone number.

although it wont help in this case as far as im aware the police wont ring you they pass on compromised numbers onto the relevant banks and the bank then contacts the customer.

Its just happened to me the bank rang to say my number had been given to them by the police on a list of compromised numbers luckily nothing has gone from my account but its a pain having to wait for my new card.

Your telephone number does not appear either on the full or edited version of the register.

I don't see any hint from what you said that the scammers have any more than a phone number.

And anyone can dial (say) 229 3213 to try this approach, if they get hung up on, or don't get a reply, try 229 3214, 229 3215, etc etc
