Natwest Overdraught due to account fees

I have a Natwest account with no overdraught facility. I was paying £12.00 per month for this account. I went away travelling for a year and a half and in the follow up to this i notified my bank they advised was best to close my account and keep my savings account, i was required to write to my branch to close the account as it can not be done over the telephone.
I wrote to the bank, ideally i should have followed this up to ensure it had been done, but in an excited frenzy to leave the country i forgot to do this!
I came back to find that each month they had tried to take the £12.00 from my account, they obviously didnt succeed and they charged me for going into an unarranged overdraught which then happened every month. It left me a few hundred quid overdrawn.
I know the dates i called Natwest and when i was advised to write in and when i wrote in as i made a note of this, will this stand if i go and see them and ask them to clear these fees? They can see i haven't used to account for well over a year is it worth trying to get this cleared or suck it up and pay it?

Which account do you have that charges £12.00 per month?
If you sent a letter was it sent recorded delivery?
Your best would be to visit a branch to discuss your options/concerns.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
If you sent them a written and signed instruction to close an account (which was in credit) then yes, definitely get in touch with them.0

It looks like it was the current select silver account, im sure it was not known by this name before i went away though, im not sure if their accounts have changed in the past 14 months.

The select silver account is £10.00 per month.
Your best option would be to visit a branch and advise them of the circumstances to see if they will refund the charges incurred.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0
