Sorry to hear of your friends diagnosis.
I too was diagnosed with BC in 2004, i recieved SSP until I reached the maximum weeks payable for it then was put onto Incapacity Benefit ( don't think this benefit exists now or has become known under a different name )
Does your friend have any Payment protection on any credit cards etc.,? if so they can claim on the insurance to cover the payments, they will also have to send doctors certificates monthly.
There is probably a information centre at the oncology unit where they can give advice too, also try CAB and Macmillan.

Make sure they pick up a form at the doctors for free prescriptions of the next five years.

I was also able to get onto a low cost energy tariff, because of the cancer (surestart with Scottish power) Its the lowest of all tariffs and each provider should have a similar scheme. Maybe give them a ring and see whats available.

SureStart/Fresh Start is now to be closed. All current customers on this tariff are to be moved over onto the standard variable one asap, but the recent price rises will not affect them until next March. I'm on the same tariff and based on what they have said will see my annual dual fuel bill rise from £1260 to well over £1400, an increase of £20 a month more over what I currently pay - £105 a month.

Thanks, glad I was able to help even if it was bad news.

I seem to have a few 'benefit warriors' that follow me around this site - just ignore them and they will go away.
