I'm doing it for the first time this year :)
I refused to pay the prices some places are looking for the proper ones or the cute ones, but by chance found this one in my local card factory shop.
It's really a puppet but it cost me £2 and I stuffed it with stuffing from an old pillow and sewed it along the bottom All proud of it too lol:o

I'll be doing it at home and with the wee one's in the school I work in so he'll be well travelled lol.

If anyone is looking for an elf to come visit them this year, I've just bought this of ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Christmas-Elf-Soft-Bodied-Green-Elf-With-Striped-Socks-SMALL-20CM-/121207533097?pt=UK_Soft_Toys_Bears&hash=item1c38882e29

Wasn't fussed on the other one I had and stuffed, so the kids will be able to play with him lol

I'm doing a bit of a variation. This.... (scroll down on the page to the Christmas Tree door)

    http://www.enchanteddoorways.co.uk/page3.htm

It's only a fiver, plus £1.99 shipping. It's just going to "appear" on the morning of December 1st, by the tree (as ours will be put up the day before). I'm planning on putting together a tiny scroll with a ribbon, announcing that the DCs official Christmas elf starts his duties on 1st December, and that he will be keeping an eye on them and reporting any mischief to Father Christmas.

I plan on fixing the door along the base of the wall by the tree, and fixing it so the door won't actually open (telling the DCs it's magic and therefore will only open for Christmas elves). That first morning, I'll just put a little glittery stuff from the door to just by the tree, so they'll think the elf put the notice on the tree. Then each day, I'll leave some little mischief that the "elf" has done, sometimes a little treat for the DCs with a little scroll again saying they'd been particularly good the day before and it was being reported to Father Christmas. I'm looking forward to it - think it'll be fun, and no doll to pose, as they'll never actually SEE the elf. LOL

I absolutely love this idea! No kids yet, but filing it away for future use...

Ikea have some soft toy elves. Saying that, I went to the one in Milton Keynes yesterday and couldn't find any so maybe they are popular because of the elf on the shelf thing.

I bought the book with the elf in last year and my grandchildren loved the mischief. They are aged 4 and a half, almost 5 and now the almost 2 and a half year old would really be into it. I also bought the DVD.

But, I can't find the elf book (with the elf inside) anywhere. I might have to get my husband to go and look in the loft with the Christmas stuff but I didn't think I had put it there.

Maybe the elf is just playing one of his tricks on me and will turn up when I'm not looking, lol.

I now have 2 elves lol. My sister bought a small one off ebay and it arrived this morning, however I'm not keen on it so will have to put it on ebay again. I'll just tell her it's one to keep in school, so she'll not know any different pmsl
