Etiquette on wheelie bins and kerbside recycling when you move

Hi,

We are moving house on a Friday.
Our wheelie bin landfill rubbish and kerbside recycling (inc. food waste) will be collected on the Tuesday (i.e. three days beforehand).
Obviously we will be leaving the wheelie-bin and recycling boxes for the new owner.

But what's the etiquette on leaving a few days worth of rubbish and recycling?
Seems silly to take it with us. Seems silly to have to go to the tip the morning we move. But feels a little rude to leave our rubbish and recycling behind.

Can't remember what happened last time, though we possibly moved on "bin day" so wasn't an issue.

What do other people do?

Thanks,

Jim

  • I'd be sensible regarding waste and days until the next collection.

We were on fortnightly collections and it was 6 days until the next collection when we moved out. I left a half empty bin.

Got to my new house and they'd left it full with a week to go.

Ask your buyers if it's okay to leave some rubbish in the bin or ask a friendly neighbour if you can put your stuff in their bin.

When we moved in on the friday the black bin was nearly full but was being emptied on the Tuesday, and the recycling bins were halfish full.

So I'd agree with above in nothing above what you'd expect there to be in a bin during the 'normal' cycle - ie if it's collected every two weeks then a week away from collection you'd expect it to be half full.

Doubly so for the refuse bin - if the recycling bins were left full then you could put some in the refuse but the other way round doesn't work

When we moved house we left empty bins, got to the new house to find no bins at all. We were in the process of getting new bins which had to be done online so we had to get that in first so hubby took the rubbish to work and put it in the skip with permission of the boss. A full week later our bins appeared on the roadside for empting completely full, the neighbour had them and had been using them for months as the house was empty, taken them in before we arrived on move day and kept them for the week while being so nice to us. Soon as the bin men had been I went out into the garden and watched as she walked towards them, went to take both (moving them both some 5 yards down her drive, saw me and took only the one.

I have to admit to using a neighbours bins previously, as a new build estate and an empty property next door we borrowed the bins while waiting (5 weeks!) for ours to be delivered.

We carried on using them until the day the neighbours moved in, at which point we fought to get all the rubbish in the one set we had. Then we went over to the neighbours, openly explained we had borrowed them and gave them back empty - they thought it a little funny and we had a good relationship from there :)

Yes, this is my thinking too, but was interested in other people's views.
Fair enough, I'd say, to leave an average few days worth of rubbish. But not fair enough to have a big clearout the day before we move and fill up the bin!

I wouldn't have a problem if an outside wheelie bin had some rubbish in it but not the recycling box as that is inside the house.

The previous Vendors of our house filled both bins on the day of their departure, with the black bin not due to be emptied for another 12 days. We were very annoyed indeed, but to be fair it was one thing in a long list of inconsiderate and shoddy things they left for us to deal with, on top of not leaving OUR house until nearly 6.30pm on the evening of completion.

I think it would be nice of you to leave at least a little bit of room for them. One less thing to fret about for them.

Don't worry, we have outdoor recycling boxes here.
  • I was moving on bin day, so happily continued to fill them all up in the 2 weeks before the move (where I lived the council collected recycling + black bins on the same day).

On moving day, the bin-men skipped my collection, I presume due to the chaos of the removal men etc. in the way. I didn't see them do it, so couldn't chase them down the road.

All I could then really do was ask the estate agent to pass on my apolologies/excuses to the buyer - I had better things to do than to take it up with the council by that point.
