How do I put a hook into plaster board wall?

I've been browsing wilkos site as I was hoping to go there at lunch. Google suggests there are specific screws and hooks you use for plasterboard, but I can't find anything on their site and I'm not sure where else I'd go.

I want to hang a large mirror on the wall and I think it's a little too heavy for anything sticky.

Any ideas if I can buy what I need from wilkos or maybe another store nearby? Failing that I'll have to buy something online.

Thanks for any advice.

Weigh the mirror. Many of the wall fixings in B&Q tell you on the packaging what they're rated for. For instance, if you have a 15kg mirror, two fixings rated for 10kg each (2x10 = 20) gives you a 20kg capability, as long as you fit them properly.

Ideally, you should establish where the wooden studwork behind the plasterboard is, and put the primary fixing(s), secured with long woodscrews, into that. Make sure there's no electrical cable in the vicinity too.

2.7kg apparently, perhaps I can use adhesive after all, sounds a lot simpler than doing all of the above!

There are 'velcro' type fasteners for hanging stuff on walls which you are supposed to be able to remove without leaving marks (on emulsioned walls anyway). They carry different ratings depending of the weight you want to hang. You can source these at stationers. They are not cheap however and for what they are, the manufacturers are making a killing! If they work, which they do in my experience anyway, and you don’t mind the price tag, it's an option.
  • I have found these to be the best type of thing to used on plasterboard.
You don't need to drill a hole first.

My builder used them a fair bit - even for light fittings. I think I got mine in B & Q.

they look good , so you dont need to screw into battens with these , just straight into the plasterboard?
I have a dividing wall between bedrooms where for the life of me i cant hear when i tap , where the battens are , so need something like these for our 22" flat screen

Perhaps I've been unlucky in the past but sometimes I've found the plasterboard just crumbles away with those.

They spread the load behind the board. Worth considering.

If you mean a 22" TV, I would be very wary of hanging anything like that directly onto plasterboard anyway. The bottom line is not the strength of the fixing, but the strength of the plasterboard.

This type of fixing is usually OK for a stud wall but with dry lining there is often not enough room behind the plasterboard to accommodate it.

The main thing to remember with most wall fixings is that the load is not trying to pull out of the wall, but downwards. That is why I find the screw-in type to be so good as they are much bigger in diameter and provide a larger area to support the weight.

Picture hooks and use 2 if it is too heavy.

if you want to find it on the floor one day, do it :)
borrow a tool to find the battens.
