Can I claim on SOGA?

I bought a family car fiat multipla 54 reg with 65k on the clock, I paid £2400, it had one previous owner and looked in good shape cosmetically so in all presumed that it would be reasonably well looked after. I spent weeks looking for the right car.

Im now well outside the 3 month dealer warranty (bought march 13 from dealer) and the car got stuck in reverse gear, it freed eventually and I got home, ive been told that the clutch needs replacing and the gearbox bearings have gone which means a new gear box (I had experienced vibrations which I thought the wheels needed balancing). Is it too late to claim against the dealer? I spend all of the money I had on this car and cant really afford this amount of expense on a car I expected to be relatively trouble free for a while at least

  • Would it be churlish of me to ask how you expected a 9 year old car to be trouble free ?

I actually feel abit sorry for used car dealers. NOt alot, but a little.

7 months of use and abuse, I personally would be sucking it up.

It would wipe out all their profit and more.

The clutch failure would be thrown out in most warranty insurance you might have bought, and the gearbox, well, that wrote off my old volvo in terms of cost...Could have got a second hand one for £300, plus labour, on a car worth £1000, so I flogged it to a volvo only breaker for £400.

In your case I'd be looking around for a second hand gear box, and a local back street place to fit it and fit a clutch at the same time.

This sounds like the best course of action. A clutch is wear and tear like tyres and brake pads, the gearbox fault has occurred well after six months of the sale so would not be covered by any consumer protection such as soga.
