The house that you rent/purchase will probably already have an energy supplier supplying it so you shouldn't really need to do anything.
You could use a comparison site like the MSE Cheap Energy Club and enter some average values and a postcode so that local energy prices are taken into account. It will not reflect your real usage so will only give a rough guide to your charges. If you only go for tariffs that have no exit penalties, you can switch whenever you want.0
