Dismantling a bay window. How much and should I do it?

Options
Hi there

I have recently discovered that the 2mx1.6m sheet of toughened glass I wanted to form the part of my new walk-in shower will not fit up my staircase!

So I am looking at other ways of getting it into the house.

Currently the only way i could do it would be to dismantle a bay window (consisting of 3 wood sash windows).

I have got some sash window companies coming in later in the week to quote me but I just wondered if any MSE users had any ideas or suggestions about this plan of action?

Regards

Jeff

I presume that you are certain it won’t go up the stairs. Have you tried a dry run with a piece of hardboard or similar of the same size? You might be surprised what you can get up narrow staircases.

Do you have a window on the same floor as the bathroom that opens more than 1.6m? You could use ladders or some sort of scaffolding, or even a crane though that will be expensive.

Can you get the glass supplied in two pieces or will that just not work?

Jeff. I am a little confused here. Do you really mean to remove a complete bay window comprising 3 pairs of window sashes and then presumably the vertical stanchions that separate them? If you do, then that suggests you are planning to hoist the glass with longest measurement horizontally. If so, I can only imagine you have got one hell of an expensive reinstatement job to carry out. As well as having to prop the bay and assuming the window is a timber construction you may well be opening a can of (wood)worms.

By any chance, is the diagonal measurement of the largest bay section greater than 1.6m? (by that I mean the distance between the top sash at the top RH corner and the bottom sash at the LH corner).
