Shame because Alianware done properly is fantastic
Have to disagree about the OS. All evidence I've seen (and personal experience) is that games running on Windows 8 perform much better than on 7*.

There's nothing wrong with the OS (the rest of the system is another matter).
Windows 8 outperforms all previous versions of Windows, from boot times to task handling. The only reason people are against Windows is because of the Metro/Modern UI which is easily disabled.0 -
Monitor included sounds good, but personally I'd be looking at a i5 for that price.
I know you aren't confident building a PC but just as a reference, my last build (about 6 months old) came in under £700;
i5-3570
Asrock Extreme4 Z77
8GB Ballistix DDR3 (1600MHz Dual-channel)
Radeon HD 7850 2GB
Crucial m4 64GB SSD
Seagate Constellation 1TB HDD
Corsair 600CX
Coolermaster K280 (oodles of room but looks pretty bland) + 3x Artic Cooling Fans
Dell Ultrasharp U2412M 24 inch IPS
Win 7 Pro 64Bit0 -
Thanks to all. Unfortunately the pc is in the pipeline so can't really change things now. I just wanted to see if I had made a mistake and it looks as if I have. I'll know for the future. Mind you, dell still have this on pre production after nearly two weeks so maybe could cancel. I had to get a finance deal as I couldn't afford it in one go which is one of the reasons for going with dell. And I know that makes it even more expensive but not everyone has 700 pound to spare. Hopefully this will be okay for now but I will take heed of everyone's comments for the future.0

It's only a mistake if there were other options open to you, and it sounds like there weren't. It's a perfectly passable gaming system. It won't run BF4 on high detail, but it will run it well if you tune down the settings.
There are better ways to spend 700 quid but I don't think you'll be disappointed.0 -

Get on to them and kick up a fuss about the delay saying want to cancel, I had the same issue on a purchase from them last year and ended up getting a further 10% off to keep the order live, this was after 10% off and 8% cashback from Quidco so all in all a fine deal.
Edited to add the spec up wih 8gig memory and I5 processor would only be costing you £30 more including monitor if you used the quidco 7% off and 7% cashback available on Alienware just now.0 -
The pc is set for delivery for Tuesday now so will have to upgrade the memory myself. Just requires swapping out the 2gb stick for a 4gb one doesnt it? Processor will be a bit trickier. When I ordered it wouldn't let me add 4gb and a monitor. It was one or the other. Tbh dells website is not very good and quite slow. Anyway, we shall see how I go. Never know, might turn out okay. Good bits of advice from all, thanks.0

You are probably entitled to return it under distance selling regulations if you want to as long as you haven't had it customised. Selecting off-the-shelf components from drop down lists is not customisation. Dell should provide you with information telling you about your right to cancel, probably by email or on a delivery note with the pc.
You won't be able to return the operating system if you unseal it though, so if its not preinstalled you'd have to decide before installing it.
Happy gaming either way0
