£1650 mates rates?

  • Steve, I agree - I think this isn't mates rates at all.

My example was where a "mate" (actually a good friend I'd known 20 years) was recommending a re-roof for £10k (similar re-roof estimates I got following his quote were half that) when I had a roofer come have a look and it was totally unnecessary work.

I'd suggest they get a couple more opinions, you could be right, it may be a tiny, awkward bathroom that takes a lot more time than somewhere you can spread out and properly work in.
    Thinking critically since 1996....

    thanks for the replies.

ive decided to strip the tiles myself then get a plumber and a tiler to do the seperate jobs.

tiles are off and didnt make must of a mess of the walls which i was happy about............now need the plumber to take the old suite out and put the bath in..........

then get it tiled and the bog n sink in. guna be a big saving on the £1650!

This has been an interesting post.As usual there were various ideas about cost and how to do the work.Firstly it was interesting you employed 2 tradesmen, something I often suggest if you are unsure what quality tiling you will get.I made sure I became good at tiling as I could then offer a complete service.Proof available to client. You also saved £100/150 stripping out the tiles.Your walls were sound for tiling which saved the cost of boarding out saving a similar amount. You mention £150 for materials, often forgotten.I also noticed your comment re-underestimating the work involved.I have just finished a bathroom which was not much above average which took 14 long days. The vast majority of work is not visible.Re-siting /re-plumbing suite/adding shower.Walls needed boarding out/much work hiding pipework etc. Customer delighted,2 more complete bathrooms as a result from neighbours.Bathrooms are hard work, not just for the tradesman but for the customer who needs to take care to get the right tradesman/tradesmen.Glad it went well for you.
